On January 23, Shanghai Metro Line 15 was officially put into operation. It is the fourth line with the highest international grade of automation (GoA4) participated by CASCO, following Shanghai Line 10, Chengdu Line 9 Phase I and Shanghai Line 18 Phase I (South Section), which is truly "driverless" as it realizes unattended and uninterrupted metro line operations, with an open cab design at the front.
Shanghai Metro Line 15
Shanghai Line 15 starts from Zizhu Hi-tech Zone Station in Minhang District and ends at Gucun Park Station in Baoshan District, covering a total length of 42.3 km and 30 underground stations. The whole line runs vertically through five administrative districts in Shanghai from north to south, connecting nine universities, four parks and three national science and innovation parks. It is of great significance to strengthen the connection between the inner and outer ring roads in the west of the city, promote the development of the regions along the ring roads and balance the passenger flow of Shanghai's rail network.
Full-featured full-line opening of GoA4
Shanghai Line 15 is the longest GoA4 line to be fully opened at one time in China. Using the signaling system solution provided by CASCO, in addition to the basic driverless functions such as automatic train wake-up, self-check, mainline operation, return to depot and hibernation, the system has also made some product innovations in details such as further enhancing operational efficiency and improving passenger experience.

For example, CASCO has created a new integrated platform door control system for Line 15, which, in addition to ensuring safety and reliability, can improve information transmission efficiency, speed up the passing of opening and closing door commands and door status information, and shorten the response time from about 3~5 seconds to about 500 milliseconds, thus reducing ineffective platform operation time and improving operational efficiency.
In addition, Line 15 has set an industry record for the shortest signaling commissioning time. In 2020, the entire project schedule was significantly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. As a post-positional specialty, the signaling system was faced with the challenges of unchanged opening schedule and significantly compressed construction period, but it overcame great pressure and became the key to the final opening of the project.
CASCO dynamic commissioning team
In order to ensure that the overall system GoA4 function is realized as scheduled, when the commissioning conditions were not yet available at the main line site, CASCO's commissioning team and design team made full use of the field test line far in the Northeast China, and conducted field testing and verification for more than 12 hours a day in the cold winter of -20℃ for half a month, for the successful implementation of the overall system function. During the peak commissioning period, the team worked around the clock under scientifically and tightly planned schedule, by multi-shift 24-hour non-stop commissioning. In the end, it took only 3 months and 25 days to complete this "speed and passion" race against time.
Continue to lead the fully automatic operation sector
Fully automatic operation signaling system is characterized by high safety, high reliability and high flexibility, while combining optimized manpower allocation, reduced operating costs and many other advantages, and has become the go-to solution for intelligent urban rail development in China. From Shanghai Metro Line 10 to Line 15, from a single line to multiple lines, the technical strength and project experience accumulated over the years, the mature and reliable products and the complete and comprehensive protection system, all these have laid the foundation for CASCO to win the top position in the field of fully automated operation.
Up to now, the four lines built and opened by CASCO are the only fully automatic operation lines in the Mainland China with GoA4 function and open cabs, covering a total mileage of 127 km, making it the "double champions" in both number and mileage of operating lines, and the leader in the fully automatic operation urban rail sector of China.
Just as a saying puts it, the vessel with the bravest rowers will stay ahead of others as thousands of vessels on rivers are competing for the advancement. Now that the boom of fully automatic operation metro construction has begun, CASCO will continue to maintain its position as a mover and shaker to actively innovate and make efforts to inject energy into China's intelligent urban rail development.
In the future, more GoA4 lines under construction by CASCO will be presented: Beijing Metro Line 3, Shenzhen Metro Line 16, Shenzhen Metro Line 20, Suzhou Rail Transit Line S1, Zhengzhou Metro Line 17 and 10 ...... Stay tuned.
